The ride from Ngurah Rai International Airport in Denpasar to Ubud is about ninety minutes by car in normal traffic. Longer at peak hours. The distance is only about 40 km, but Bali roads are slower than a map suggests.
Here are the options, in the order I’d rank them.
Pre-arranged private driver
The straightforward answer. Our team arranges a driver through the villa; you’ll be met at arrivals, luggage in the car, air conditioning on, no fumbling with apps after a long flight.
- Cost: fixed, quoted per booking. Send your flight details when you book the villa and it’s handled.
- Time: ~90 minutes non-peak, up to 2 hours during evening rush.
- Best for: almost everyone. If you’re travelling with kids, a lot of luggage, or arriving late, this is the only sensible choice.
Airport-authorised taxi
Blue Bird has the strongest reputation. Buy a fixed-price coupon at the counter inside the terminal, walk to the taxi rank outside, done.
- Cost: fixed by the coupon.
- Time: same as the driver.
- Watch for: the general taxi scrum outside can be aggressive; the Blue Bird counter avoids it.
Grab or Gojek
Both apps work at the airport. There is a designated pickup point, so follow the signs; ride-share cars cannot pick up at the arrivals kerb.
- Cost: usually a bit less than the airport taxi.
- Time: same 90 minutes; may involve a short walk to the pickup point.
- Best for: solo travellers or couples with carry-on only. Cash is usually cleaner than card in-app for the driver.
Motorbike / scooter
Not with luggage. Bali traffic between the airport and Ubud is not something to encounter on your first day. Save the scooter for once you’re at the villa.
What the ride actually looks like
The first twenty minutes out of the airport are the slow part: heavy traffic through Kuta, Seminyak-adjacent areas, and the toll road to the north. Somewhere around Denpasar the density drops. From there it is a straight run north-east through Sanggingan, Batubulan, and small villages that feel increasingly rural. By the last twenty minutes you are on quieter roads winding through paddy, and that is how you know you are close to Ubud.
If you have a specific interest, whether a temple, a coffee stop, or a warung, a private driver can build in a stop or two. This can turn the transfer into a light half-day tour.
Arriving at Villa Samaddhi
The last kilometre in Peliatan is on a small side lane. A car fits at the door; scooters are easiest. If you’re coming with a large SUV, mention it when you book the transfer so we can meet you on the main road with a driver.
The villa host is on WhatsApp before you arrive. Send your location on the road and they will be waiting at the door with a cold welcome drink.
